Dating much? What about online dating? We all want to be loved and to love, right? Well, maybe not everyone. I love to love and love to be loved. But as far as dating goes, I like to be fed. It’s a crazy world out there, so be careful! Watch that video to the right. My friend Katharine Blodget just wrote this article about online dating. I share some of her tips below.
I am sorry to report that most people have some online-dating skill-development to do. If you want to use dating sites to find someone cool to hang out with after (during?) work, it helps to make a decent first impression.
Below are the tips that Katharine shared:
INTERNET DATING TIPS FOR WOMEN:
- Don’t state in your ads that you are “feminine,” “paradise,” or a “rare breed…” Everyone says these things, and they don’t help much. If you’re a girl, one can assume you’re “feminine” (Okay, maybe not). “Paradise” is a place. And a “rare breed” sounds like a horse or dog.
- Do post a good looking picture of yourself, the best you can find. Sorry, it matters. (And it matters to you, too. So get down off that high horse!)
- Don’t post a profile (side view of your face) as your main headshot photograph. Revealing half a side of your face is sometimes sexy but also suggests that the rest might be horrifying. Get the bad news out of the way.
- Do say “looking forward to hearing from you…” and be sure of what you want to hear. Headlines like “Wanna try something new and playful?” or “Big is best” are better suited for a porn site.
- Don’t load on sarcasm or boast about yourself in your ad. Extolling your virtues and accomplishments can sound arrogant. It’s also boring.
- Do describe yourself and your age truthfully, and eliminate anyone who does any of the dont’s above. The truth will come out eventually. It might as well be now.
I wonder why we’re consumed with dating in the first place. I think every woman, whether they are a survivor or not, should read Women, Sex, and Addiction: A Search for Love and Power. I’m just saying. And if you are one of those women still obsessed with getting married and feel like you’re nothing without a man etc etc, I suggest (demand) that you read America’s Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines. Seriously. Not that dating isn’t fun, it depends on why you’re doing it. What’s underneath the surface of your desires? I was hungry.
Speaking of the truth, I wrote a book and a movie about online dating. What? When? Do you ever sleep? I’ll share it one of these days. I’m busy writing Hawk Dances and working on the Survivor Manual and the Foundation at the moment. Maybe I’ll make it a down-loadable book and put it in the affiliate program. Ha ha!
