History (or Her-Story):
I began writing when I was eight. My eclectic mother would tell me to “write it down” when I was upset about another crazy adventure in our life. I began my professional writing career with Tumbleweeds that I co-wrote with director Gavin O’Connor based on my first manuscript I wrote about my mom when I was nineteen. The film won the filmmaker’s trophy at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival and brought the lead actress, Janet McTeer, a Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win in 2000. Tumbleweeds was based on my life and a chapter in my first novel.
I went on to adapt other novels for the big and small screen including Charms for the Easy Life by Kaye Gibbons for Showtime starring Gena Rowlands and Mimi Rogers. I got to meet Gena Rowlands and hang out in John Cassavetes’s house. That was awesome! And Mimi Rogers was one of the greatest producers I’ve ever worked with. Forget the stereotype of the dumb pretty actress, she is smart as a whip and great to work with.
…The real charm here isn’t the rabbit’s food but the work of Angela Shelton, who turned the historic novel by Kaye Gibbons into a witty and engaging teleplay filled with sparkle, the right amount of sentimentality and some truly memorable performances.Hollywood Reporter

I left Hollywood for a while to make my directing debut by traveling the US interviewing other Angela Sheltons in an effort to survey American women. That was the birth of the multi-award winning documentary Searching for Angela Shelton that landed me on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours Investigates, NPR, Lifetime Television for Women and the cover of the New York Times. That was some Fancy Press!
Making that film put my whole life on hold for a long time as I traveled, speaking about the epidemic of abuse. I wrote Finding Angela Shelton, about how my directing debut, Searching for Angela Shelton, changed my life and opened my eyes to the epidemic of child sexual abuse and violence.
After traveling with my book and documentary and interviewing thousands of survivors and advocates, I created the Be Your Own Hero Workbook to help people move past pain and into living fun healthy lives. The movie, book and workbook are all used in classrooms, support groups and therapist’s offices around the country. That makes me happy and it is an honor to help. I compiled a Writing Page to help you with your writing too for those of you who are ready to write your book, movie or memoir. I enjoy inspiring you to love yours too.
I modeled for twelve years (don’t hold it against me). I wrote my first manuscript at the age of 19 while modeling in Paris. I bridged into acting from modeling when I booked the lead in Gavin O’Connor’s first film, Comfortably Numb. I began acting at eight-years-old when I was a mime at the local mall. Yes I was. I went on to do community theater and in my teens I really did play Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and the March Hare in Alice in Wonderland.
In my spare time, I do comedy bits around town in Los Angeles and New York and yes, I was in the Air Guitar Championships and featured in the documentary AIR GUITAR NATION! “You don’t have to be a rock star to be a rock star” was my quote. (I am even in the trailer, hehe)
I became a Superhero for children in The Safe Side video series created by Baby Einstein’s Julie Clark and won an Emmy for that performance. It’s on my mantal. I have a lifelong goal to host Saturday Night Live more than once like Christopher Walken. There’s still time! There’s a fan page for that too! I have spoken in Congress, universities, military bases, high schools, elementary schools, community centers, conferences and seminars nationwide and abroad.
