We’re on our Foodie Road Trip Honeymoon!
Our plan was to have no schedule (except I had to speak in Des Moines August 1) and no interstates – only food and cute places to stay. We even pulled to the end of our driveway with a “well, which way do you want to go?” We sat there for a moment and I said “lobster roll” and my husband paused (ah… we’re headed to Des Moines, and Maine is the opposite direction…) before he said, “let’s do it.”
We are now in Des Moines after our first week on the road from New York, Maine, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, Indiana and Illinois.
Here’s a story in pictures for those who have asked how the honeymoon is going. It’s delicious!
We did not eat here, but we were passing by and just had to get a picture. There was Chinese Restaurant and Town Restaurant along with Coffee Shop and General Store – it was very generically hilarious.
My husband asked for me please to share pictures of my plates post eating since they have their own look about them.
Four Chimney B&B in Bennington
I’m so impressed with how they hid that TV.
One of my fav breakfasts so far. That’s mine with the blueberry cream cheese sauce. Yes. Oh yes.
Here’s a close up.
One of our fav stops – Korean food. Oh lord do we love kimchi.
Shira Kiku Korean in Nashua, NH.
This was on the way to the east coast to get a lobster roll.
Listed as the best place to get a lobster roll – North Hampton, NH
And yes! I know we drove right by so many friends and family! But alas, we’re on our honeymoon so we didn’t stop in to visit. We waved and mapped out another trip to come visit everyone.
This place needs a mention. I mean, it’s shaped like a piece of cheese. Really?
With a mouse on top? Had to go in there.
Holy mother of all goodness – The Old Vines Wine Bar in Kennybunkport, Maine is outstanding.
Go there. Ask the bartender Ben what that concoction with pineapples is and wow will you be wowed.
Apparently, it’s not listed. You have to be curious and ask about it. Oh, it’s got chilies in there, pineapple, vanilla beans and white rum. It’s crazy good.
Amazing tapas. We plan to go back there and go through the whole menu.
And this wine is not just excellent because it carries my maiden name – it is sheer perfection.
Had to try the place that had a Throw Down with Bobby Flay at Brass Compass Cafe in Rockland, Maine.
I actually asked the waitress what she recommended. She looked at me funny before saying, ah.. the lobster club.
While in Maine, we’d had our fill of lobster, so we found a Mediterranean place in Camden and wow was it yummy! This was the fried cheese we shared.
One of our favorite meals so far – Maine Meats! Just outside of Rockland, wow, that place knows there stuff about meat, cheese and all the extras that make it yummy. They had just opened and didn’t even have a sign out! We just happened to discover them while checking out cool looking places. We had planned to go to a fancy place for dinner (kind of rare on this trip) but after finding Maine Meats, we picked some of their prime choices and made a good ole redneck picnic on our cooler in the front yard of where we were staying. Complete with AMAZING wine – Carol Shelton Zin. Yum.
We wanted to hit all the “Triple Ds” from the Food Network’s show Diners Drive-Ins and Dives but sadly, most of them are in big cities, which we’re trying to avoid since they’re litered with interstates and all! But we did make it to the A1 Diner in Gardiner, ME and WOW.
Yummy Thai food (and we mean YUMMY!) in Newport, VT
Worked up an appetite on a 3 hour kayak trip.
Our favorite meal for sure for the first week. Holy mother of goodness. The Thai House in St. Albans, VT. WOW.
Our favorite place to stay so far. We want to go back here so badly. They allow pets to. Yes, I burst into tears on the porch talking to the owner about Norma. Yes, yes I did.
Made it to another “Triple D” outside of Buffalo in Lackawanna, NY – the Mulberry Cafe.
Stuffed zucchini blossoms with truffle oiled ricotta. Huh? Oh yes.
Good ole hungry man American breakfast.
Cream cheese and cherry stuffed French toast. Wha…?
Jack’s Barcelona Drive-In off the Lake Erie shore.
Skyline Chili – Cleveland, Ohio.
If you’ve never had it, you really should. I was introduced to it years ago when I was in Ohio speaking. I thought chili on noodles sounded disgusting but then I was sold.
Yep, we ate at the top grossing Pizza Hut in America. (or so they say in Kendallville, IN)
It sure was good, and everyone sure was friendly.
I got a crazy sweet tooth and had to stop at Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream in Merrillville, IN.
I had red velvet and better batter.
And then another favorite – tacos. But the real deal Mexican street tacos we love. This place was remarkable and not even listed on Yelp! A guy at the AmericInn in Oswego, IL told us about it. I’m going to have to get on Yelp and add this place, it was that good.
We had amazing Vietnamese in Des Moines today at A Dong. Yes, it’s called A Dong! Pictures to follow soon, not of the dong.
Then I went for a mani-pedi and my husband sat in a massage chair next to me and got his feet done too – without polish. Although he was tempted to go polka-dot.
The next phase of our foodie road trip honeymoon starts up again after I speak tomorrow. I’ll share those bites next.
May you love and eat well!
