It is Human Trafficking Awareness Day today and it got me thinking about the trafficking of children. I hear about the raping and trafficking of children constantly in America. This is not a far-away issue in some other country as many people, it is right in our backyards.
On the way home from the Battered Mother’s Custody Conference today I was in the airport during a huge football game. The whole airport practically had this air of camaraderie. Strangers shared nods and grins and they cheered for the favorites to win. People helped one another move closer to the screen. Others shouted out plays that passing travelers may have missed. Everyone was together for one goal.
I thought what if we all looked at the family courts like we look at sports. I say that because across America, children are being given to their perpetrators by judges in family courts. Those children are being raped, beaten and traded (trafficked). I know this because I’ve seen the cases. The children speak and are not heard. Yet another child was sent for unsupervised visits with her rapist dad who then took her to another state to abuse her with his friends. That is human trafficking.
What if we looked at family courts like we look at sports?
I can hear the courts-caster now! And they’re off. The father has brought in a paid expert witness to show that the mother is crazy for saying her child shows signs of abuse. That expert says that there is no such thing as a child disclosing this sort of abuse and all allegations have been made up by the mom. The expert then declares that the mother has a syndrome that doesn’t even exist. The judge let’s it in. A rookie advocate calls the judge out. The mother’s lawyer brings up the fact that the father had child porn on his computer. There is a hush in the crowd. Do we have a play? NO, the judge throws it out as unrelavant. The Guardian ad Litem says she thinks the mother is lying. The father passes her a note. What was that? Did the judge see that? No. The judge orders the mother to hand over full custody of the child. But what about the medical records showing evidence of sexual abuse? The judge says he will hold the mother in contempt if she says one more thing. Is this a game or what? The mother has to hand over her child. The father is waiting with his van to take the girl to New York. The mother makes a run for it. She’s taking her daughter to safety. The child is excited. We have a play people. We are going to have a touch down but no, wait, the Center for Missing and Exploited Children comes after the mother for kidnapping just as she’s almost to safety. The child is in hysterics. Will this ever end? We’ll be right back after these words from our sponsor.
