Pray the Devil Back to Hell with the Unity of Community

When I began Searching for Angela Shelton and was so dedicated to keeping it going, I was called crazy by many and urged forward by more. I borrowed money from some, was gifted money by more, was threatened and hated by some and supported and loved by more. It has not been easy at all yet I don’t have a complaint about it, I’d do it all again. Even the fall down the well of hell part.

During the most trying of times on this life’s journey I always went back to this dream I had when I first began opening Pandora’s box. It came when I was halfway done shooting the documentary and we were halfway through our huge trip across America.

June 1, 2001

I keep dreaming about a huge crowd of women filling the streets. Each one of them has an air of bravery and courage as if they’ve been through a war and won. They are dancing and laughing. It’s a big crowd of women with good men surrounding them, like a protective shield. I wake up every time wondering where I was in the crowd. I never see myself, but I know I’m in there somewhere. It makes me think about my mother always telling me how important dreams are and the meanings they have. I’ve had that dream about five times now since January.

As I met the Angela Sheltons, they exuded such strength and wisdom that I was the one who felt called to become a warrior when I was the one making the movie. You can see it for free on Snag films or order a DVD of the limited version (with the surprise ending) or the new official version with director’s commentary, Spanish subtitles and closed captioning for the hearing impaired. When I first did the limited copy, I didn’t realize I needed closed captioning – one of the many of things I learned along the way. I also learned about the epidemic of child sexual abuse, rape and violence. After years of traveling and speaking about it, I’ve seen that what we need most is unity. Angela Shelton in New York put it quite well in the film:

Angela Shelton, you’re right. We need to bond together as women and as a community. I just spoke at a women’s conference about the fact that there is no community without unity and there is no unity without u! Here is the answer to our question, here is a dream realized. Let’s replicate it in the US.

I just saw this tonight and it left me with a broad wide bright happy smile on my face. Though the war is hard and long, prayer works. Love and Commitment work. That was the title of my talk that opened the conference – Love Commitment and Legal Fees.  (I’ll talk about legal fees later, let’s just sit with love and commitment for now)

Ah, the dream journal… it's a wild ride into your subconscious. I didn't see myself in that crowd either at first but I'm in there, up front boldly moving forward with you.

I loved waking up to this. I'm not even awake to put my thoughts together yet, but this is a beautiful thing… when I read about your dream this time I cried… I've read about it before… but I never saw myself in that crowd when I visualized it… but this time, I saw in that crowd myself and my husband who so bravely and unwaveringly and lovingly supports me in everything I do. I've dreamed every night since I started my dream journal… I can't wait to see where those dreams take me… you are so right, prayer does work. It's amazing how much can change if we are just willing to try. You're such a blessing to me. =)
